30 faces no.12

Okay, so about 2 years ago, a friend gave me some wood, and got me started on wood sculpture.
Every once in a while, I pick it up, and work a bit more on it. I don't have many tools, and there are lots of things I still need to learn, but it is so fun doing it!
So , tonight, instead of drawing, I sculpted some more. It's a long way from done, and it might be another year till it is, but it's super fun, and one day, there will be a completed face.
For now, enjoy the process, and if you have any experience with wood sculpture/carving, let me know, cause I have much to learn!

Sharpen your chisels ten times as often as you think you should.

And always push the blade away from you. As a friend often said "never cut towards your thumb, always cut towards your chum". Corny, but it sticks.

This is a first for 30faces, no doubt. Carve on.

wilsonian-- I didn't even know I had to sharpen the chisels, but I guess that makes sense. I do know enough to carve away from my thumb. What else do you know? Tell me!!!

Please do not tell me you don't know how to sharpen chisels. You will not believe the difference it makes. Well, it's like the difference between drawing with a sharp pencil, and drawing with one that the lead has broken off below the wood, and you have to push really hard to get it to work.

Are you using curved carving chisels, or straight blades?
